Bobby's February Mix

I've read Richie's post below but not yet listened to the mix ... I'm impressed by the ambition and a bit jealous (as I had a similar project planned for April although with a more pastoral and less carnal slant).

I seemed to spend February in a gloomy mood so to counteract that I spent the month listening to horror soundtracks, particularly those built upon a disco base. I've come to realise it's a more extensive genre than I had imagined - their are enough discarded tracks for at least one sequel, although why anyone would come back for more of this I don't know.

Mr Moroder keeps cropping up on my mixes so I'll promise that the next one will be Giorgio-free.

I've done a tracklisting, although it may be a bit misleading as some of the tracks are just looped samples of tiny bits of rhythm or intro.

February mix by the Immoralist

As per Brian’s post, sorry for the delay in actually doing anything, and I promise to try better in future.

My mix for January was made whilst on Thankyou DJ paternity leave, so I was missing the enjoyment I get from playing old records as a soundtrack for chatter and boozing down the George and Dragon. My mix was intended to recreate that experience, both for listeners to it and for myself. I thus set myself the task of doing the mix all in one take and working from a pool of tracks like a miniature electronic record bag rather than having a set selection and order of tracks. This means that the transitions are a bit ropey in places and don’t bear too much scrutiny. My advice is to put it on in the background and have a drink to recreate that authentic pub experience.

I can’t give a track listing like Brian because I did it some time ago and have now forgotten. I wanted to start with the deep throat tune and had it in my mind to end with some pony-related fun and play some other stuff in between. Particular favourites are Malcolm McClaren doing his Buffalo thing and the nice Ashford and Simpson number, Stay Free. During the course of the mix, in keeping with the bar DJ theme, I consumed 3 cans of Stella Artois, went to the bog twice and smoked one cigarette. The last of these involved going outside which explains the presence of the suitably long Beginnings by Chicago in the mix.

Moving on to the February mix, I decided that, being the month with valentines day in it, I would do something romantic, i.e. a shag tape. To make things interesting, I decided to make the mix entirely from the sounds of people making the beast with two backs. This is the first time in a few years that I have worked at such a level, and the resultant piece is not particularly erotic and quite badly put together. To do it properly I would have had to rename the site twelve mixes in twelve years. Anyone who does manage to make lurrve with it playing will receive a special present from me (a picture of my cock or something like that). The experience was very enjoyable and is one I may return to, possibly using random field recordings next time rather than porn.

This month’s mix will be posted before the month ends and is looking like it will be exploring all things glitchy. Also, I am, on your behalf, trying to see if there is such a thing as a free lunch by making it entirely out of tracks released under the creative commons licence. You’ll be able to dance to this one.

Sorry for the delay ...

... if anybody is actually reading this then sorry for the delay. The next batch of mixes are nearly complete and we should get them up at the weekend. I had assumed that no-one was paying any attention but a couple of people have asked me when the next mixes are online (on the rare occassions that I have made it out of an evening) so thanks for asking. And Morgan - if you didn't like the last mix your really going to dislike the next one. I'd like to get some more dirty rubbish scratching included but tend to use dead travelling time to put stuff together and there isn't enough room on the train tables to fit a pair of Technics.

I also think we're going to drop the whole voting for your favourite mix because no-one quite seemed to get it.

If anyone is interested the track listing on my last mix ('Alex' for the anyone who didn't work it out) is:

[00:00] Welcome - Doctor Rockit
[00:27] January:What Time Is Love - KLF
[01:39] Hater - Various Productions
[01:39] January - Pilot

[10:24] Think Like A Lover - Ned Doheney
[11:44] Ghost Riders In The Sky - Susan Christie
