Musical Innovator

Having invented the sound the kids are calling "Big Beat" yesterday I thought today I'd create another genre which I shall name "Shoegazing". I started with some bagpipes and got a little bit drunk and wondered what they would sound like through a fuzzbox. Quite good as it happens, so I sent everything else through the same effects. The results are here.

Done another poo

Here's another tune what I made. I like most of it because there is a tension between the spooky bits and the heavy-handed breakbeats. Maybe I've invented a new genre of music which I could call "Big Beat" and get that bloke out of the Housemartins to contribute, or maybe I'm not very interesting. Gratuitous porn sample alert about 2 minutes in.

PROGKRAUT

It was Steve' birthday in November and he asked me to prepare a set of strictly Prog Rock and Kraut Rock. I didn't stick too faithfully to the brief but I've uploaded a condensed version of the first half of the night. There's a horrible glitch mid way through the Gottsching track that I can't work out how to rid myself off. I've tried for a couple of weeks to work it out but the it seems beyond my technical skills - I'll repost if I can carry out the necessary repairs. And to anyone who was there at the George & Dragon sorry for the second half of my set - Nick Drake seemed like a good idea in rehearsals.

Daddy, I did a poo

I've been circling round this whole disco re-edit thing for a long time and here is my first effort. After 32 bars of actual arrangement the rest is just mucking around. Let me know what you think of my work in progress.

6am Maternal

I know I’ve neglected the site of late, but I got distracted by actually making music (which may be posted at a later date) rather than mixing together other peoples’ stuff. Anyway here are a couple of mixes I’ve done of late.

The first, slow, I did imagining about 6am when you’re at a party in someone’s house and the sun is up, and you’re thinking about when the pubs open and still want some beat-based music but can’t be arsed to actually dance. It is a selection of the mellower end of house music.

The second came about because I work with the legend that is Lee “the Cat” Cattini and I promised to give him some random stuff off my hard drive for his mp3 player. He’s a big fan of the Smiths (I’m not) so I tried to select some stuff that I like that falls into the category of guitar-centered music with some added stuff that he really ought to have. A selection of this has ended up as a mixtape which veers all over the place.

On listening to them both, I’d actually prefer if the cat’s mixtape at 6am.

Chip Capital of East Anglia

Great Yarmouth has four family owned chip vans parked next to each other in the market square. I've never seen so many options on toppings.

Survival of the fittest

Hello

I’ve been a bit slack on the mix front over the last couple of months due partly to parental responsibilities and partly to the switch to laptop-based song playing. I’m operating a Darwinian policy with music at the moment, so the following includes stuff which will be eliminated from my set list based on natural selection.

First Up, an 80s electropop mix. Listening back to it the tunes I’m going to cull are mostly the more Southern European tracks. Germans shouting “go go go” seem to work better than happy Italians.

Next is some Disco stuff. I like quite a lot of this, but some of it is very hard to mix, so it will have to go. I’m liking the BeeGees re-edit at the end.

Third up is some odds and sods which may contain traces of music made this millennium. “Bahama Mama” is about as good as music gets.

Finally, a house mix that pretty much compiled itself. If I could drive and were being chased through a European capital city at high speed, this is what would be on the car stereo.

Russians

For the second month running a no-tricks mix. I was invited to play the basement at 3partsand last Friday (thanks Ash) and this is a rough sketch of the tracks I played out. We were supposed to finish at 2am but I think the power was finally pulled at nearer to 5am. It was fun for me and hopefully not too painful for the rest of the room. Someone must have enoyed it as they demanded my phone number so I could play at "a couple of raves up Tottenham way".

The last track I know I played three times over the course of the evening. Hope nobody noticed.

And sorry for the "baton" track at 24:53.

[00:00] Baroque - Chateau Flight
[03:44] Elan (Prins Thomas Version) - Justus Kohncke
[11:32] G-String Orchestra - Sneak Thief

[18:17] Midnight Is The Time (LMD64 Salsoul Remix) - Demis Roussos
[20:44] Conquestadores Extraterrestriales (Remix) - Legowelt
[24:53] Fear Medley - Easy Going
[31:21] Fear Edit - Serge Santiago
[36:21] Robot Is Systematic - 'Lectric Warriors
[41:04] La Voix (Isolators Remix) - Alden Tyrrel
[44:34] Stratus Energy (Special Disco Mix) - Faze Action
[49:20] Kiss Me Again - Dinosaur L
[53:45] Beggin (Pilooski Edit) - Frankie Valli

Download it here Russian.

EDIT: I have re-upped the download to deal with some "issues" the first version had (ie there is music all the way rather than five minute gaps of silence interspersed at regular intervals)

Bobby's Back

It's been a long time ....

A quick fill in mix while I make some time to do a proper job. This effort is pretty "phoned in" and sounds a lot like every other mix on the interblog from the last three years, but I put it together on a late night train ride with a pair of those horrible white 'buds' that dont fit properly in my strangely shaped head.

[26:42] State Of Shock - Mick Jackson and Michael Jagger
[32:03] Love Is In The Air (Mock & Toof Remix) - The Juan Maclean

Immoralist May Mix

This month I have mostly been downloading disco songs and my mix shares with you some of the stuff I have found.

The mix starts with a couple of numbers that could have been made in the seventies, but weren’t (they were actually made last Friday or something). I’ve chosen them because they have the spirit of the “Warriors” soundtrack which is officially the best music to listen to when commuting on the underground and thus ideal walkman fodder.

We then move into the main part of the mix, which is some delightful disco gems. Chief amongst these is Jean Carne’s “Was that all it was” which was a key song at The Saint nightclub in New York, and a track I’ve been wanting to have for a long time.

Things get a bit housy-er from here on in and climax with all nine minutes of Sebbo’s “Beirut Boogie”. There is a man having some sort of fit in front of a keyboard set to “parp” when a sinister orchestra wanders in. No bass line. Wrong on so many levels but my top tune so far this year.

Immoralist Spring Cleaning

It’s April so I’ve been doing a bit of spring-cleaning, and thus proudly give you a mixed bag of 1980s tunes. Lots of your young people’s bands seem to be rehashing the music of my youth, so I thought I’d revisit the era and put together some stuff that hasn’t been revived.

First up is a remix of Joy Division that Malcolm Maclaren did as a present. Vast improvement on the original but a bugger to mix out of, so this dictated that the next song would be some sparse and crude sounding electro by Phillipe Laurent. As I feel I have to at least twice per mix, I now blow my cool by mixing in Let’s Go All The Way, a song with zero credibility but probably the ultimate 80s snare drum sound. This leads nicely into some Tom Dolby, highly underrated chap who made some really good albums and, as shown here, was not afraid of slap bass.

Next up are Cabaret Voltaire who turned their drum machines up to 11 for this one. I don’t think they were as credible at this point in their career, but I always liked this track. We then seamlessly move into the theme music from Who Dares Wins, a genius film about the SAS that taught me that all peace campaigners are actually dangerous terrorists who do really bad theatre. My next offering is by It’s Immaterial, the lead singer of which lived opposite me when I was a student in Liverpool in the mid 80s. Their slightly melancholic whimsy seems to be something that Merseyside bands do very well.

Following on from this I give you some Blancmange, who never really lived up to their early promise. We then use a bit more electro as a bridging device and to up the tempo (good track though by Material). Next you are instructed to not mess around with a guy in shades, oh no, followed by Trevor Horn using some left over Art of Noise sounds to remix Yes. We now come to Who Do You Love, a track Phil Collins liked so much that he redid it (and sucked all the funk out). A highlight of the mix is Fear by Easy Going which is the rudest late disco song every with a stunning bass line. The full mix is about 15 minutes, so you only get a bit of it here so there is still enough space for some good Simple Minds (just before they blew it). Lastly is some A-ha, who I still can’t decide about after all these years. Are they the genius songwriters that many think they are or just overly dramatic knobs?

Download the Immoralist April Mix here. (For those of you less Net Savvy than me, when you get to the Div Share page, do a right-click on the download button and select save as).

Bobby Jackson Missing Out Of Action

Sorry for my continued absence. All the usual reasons: working too much, laptop temporarily dead blah blah blah. Normal service will be resumed at some point, but I'll have to go for a big finish to make the magic 12 in the blog title. Rich: any chance you can cover for me - got any spare mixes to keep our ever dwindling audience supplied? I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks and had hoped to produce another mix but my shiny silver slab doesn't want to hold any juice at the moment.

I liked the glitchy mix - had me head nodding a good ten minutes before I had noticed my neck moving which I am sure is a good sign. I've uploaded it to my Pod for a couple more listens while we are away. Will give some more considered thoughts after I have had a chance to do some considering.

ps Sort out your ID3 tags Mr Immoralist!

March Immoralist Mix

Is it possible to get something for nothing? Yes (and it’s a very big hmmm with that yes) you can. I’ve spent the last month knocking around the internet to see if there is anything good to be had from creative commons licensed (google it) music. I’ve discovered that making bad trance is second only to viewing porn as the activity of choice for bored teenagers. They should have stayed with the porn.

I spent a small amount of time getting together some nice glitchy house music for your pleasure. This is the sort of thing I listen to when I go on the tube in the morning (I need big bass to wake me up).

Get the mixy stuff here.

Bobby's February Mix

I've read Richie's post below but not yet listened to the mix ... I'm impressed by the ambition and a bit jealous (as I had a similar project planned for April although with a more pastoral and less carnal slant).

I seemed to spend February in a gloomy mood so to counteract that I spent the month listening to horror soundtracks, particularly those built upon a disco base. I've come to realise it's a more extensive genre than I had imagined - their are enough discarded tracks for at least one sequel, although why anyone would come back for more of this I don't know.

Mr Moroder keeps cropping up on my mixes so I'll promise that the next one will be Giorgio-free.

I've done a tracklisting, although it may be a bit misleading as some of the tracks are just looped samples of tiny bits of rhythm or intro.

[00:00] February Brings The Rain - Julie London
[01:05] Assault On Precinct 13 (Main Theme) - John Carpenter

February mix by the Immoralist

As per Brian’s post, sorry for the delay in actually doing anything, and I promise to try better in future.

My mix for January was made whilst on Thankyou DJ paternity leave, so I was missing the enjoyment I get from playing old records as a soundtrack for chatter and boozing down the George and Dragon. My mix was intended to recreate that experience, both for listeners to it and for myself. I thus set myself the task of doing the mix all in one take and working from a pool of tracks like a miniature electronic record bag rather than having a set selection and order of tracks. This means that the transitions are a bit ropey in places and don’t bear too much scrutiny. My advice is to put it on in the background and have a drink to recreate that authentic pub experience.

I can’t give a track listing like Brian because I did it some time ago and have now forgotten. I wanted to start with the deep throat tune and had it in my mind to end with some pony-related fun and play some other stuff in between. Particular favourites are Malcolm McClaren doing his Buffalo thing and the nice Ashford and Simpson number, Stay Free. During the course of the mix, in keeping with the bar DJ theme, I consumed 3 cans of Stella Artois, went to the bog twice and smoked one cigarette. The last of these involved going outside which explains the presence of the suitably long Beginnings by Chicago in the mix.

Moving on to the February mix, I decided that, being the month with valentines day in it, I would do something romantic, i.e. a shag tape. To make things interesting, I decided to make the mix entirely from the sounds of people making the beast with two backs. This is the first time in a few years that I have worked at such a level, and the resultant piece is not particularly erotic and quite badly put together. To do it properly I would have had to rename the site twelve mixes in twelve years. Anyone who does manage to make lurrve with it playing will receive a special present from me (a picture of my cock or something like that). The experience was very enjoyable and is one I may return to, possibly using random field recordings next time rather than porn.

Download hurricane Dirk Diggler here.

This month’s mix will be posted before the month ends and is looking like it will be exploring all things glitchy. Also, I am, on your behalf, trying to see if there is such a thing as a free lunch by making it entirely out of tracks released under the creative commons licence. You’ll be able to dance to this one.

Sorry for the delay ...

... if anybody is actually reading this then sorry for the delay. The next batch of mixes are nearly complete and we should get them up at the weekend. I had assumed that no-one was paying any attention but a couple of people have asked me when the next mixes are online (on the rare occassions that I have made it out of an evening) so thanks for asking. And Morgan - if you didn't like the last mix your really going to dislike the next one. I'd like to get some more dirty rubbish scratching included but tend to use dead travelling time to put stuff together and there isn't enough room on the train tables to fit a pair of Technics.

I also think we're going to drop the whole voting for your favourite mix because no-one quite seemed to get it.

If anyone is interested the track listing on my last mix ('Alex' for the anyone who didn't work it out) is:

[00:00] Welcome - Doctor Rockit
[00:27] January:What Time Is Love - KLF
[01:39] Hater - Various Productions
[01:39] January - Pilot
[05:23] Emphasis - Harald Grosskopf
[10:24] Think Like A Lover - Ned Doheney
[11:44] Ghost Riders In The Sky - Susan Christie

[21:35] Pathway To Glory - Loggins & Messina
[25:19] Waterfall - Linus Loves
